Sorry, I editted my post before you finished replying because I wasn't making myself clear enough Still, everything you mentioned can be tranced back to childhood experiences, reactive discipline is a band-aid solution. Also, you can't go back and compare humans to primitive beasts, we're the most adapable intelligent species on the planet. I'm saying that direct discipline would not be necessary, it will occur naturally if you lead by example, provide all the appropriate stimulus, etc. Don't confuse reactive discipline with 'the teaching of social values', even though they are almost the same thing.

well, then, sorry. but, you are forgetting the roughly 30% of personality that is genetic. some children do need a spanking every once in a wile, because they are naturally too stubborn to respond to any other discipline. that's not every child, and that's not all the time, but occasionally, it is needed for some children. and besides stubbornness, there are kids like me who didn't respond to other punishments because they weren't really punishments to me. i've always had a vivid imagination and a good memory, so putting me in time out, or sending me too my room didn't really affect me, because i could literally go in my head and play pokemon just like on a gameboy, or remake a power rangers episode with me in it. The level of effect genetics have on personality and behaviour is easily smothered through experience. I can look at myself as an example, as a kid I was a freaking spaz (which I have little doubt was spurred along by influences within my family), pretty much as outgoing as you could possibly get. Yet through the constant emotional pain of being discouraged by my teachers and peers I became extremely shy/introverted. Disappointing tbh. I became a polar opposite of myself. I agree though, I can definitely feel that 30% spaz still deep within my ego. Edited by SirParagon, Aug 18 2011, 04:43 AM.

Everyone goes through puberty though. People handle it differently, but I don't think that is an excuse. I changed so much when I hit puberty. A woman's body changes much more drastically than a man's when hitting puberty. I went from being 80 lbs super thin to having big hips and more fat on my body. I had to cope with it, and I played sports. If kids now and days are just thinking about killing themselves for having a hard life or being bullied, then there is something wrong with this society. There are so many resources in public schools for them to reach out. I've been through those things so I can't really understand why a kid would decide to kill themselves. There are kids with disorders and lives that are terrible, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. They keep going. Kids should have the same rights as adults? We might as well let kids run for president too. Kids need to go through what all kids have to go through. As they get older, they will get more rights. There is nothing wrong with being a kid in this society today. They have a lot of freedom. No one is saying that a kid should be beaten senseless. However, there should be some discipline. Kids now and days don't get enough of that because of the psychological crap that people do studies on. My parents were raised the same way as me, and they are hard working individuals. How can you teach a kid that something is wrong when you cannot spank them or hit them lightly? Ground them? I think for most kids a grounding is awesome because they have everything they want in their room. I don't see that much as a punishment. People have been spanking kids for years. I guess kids now and days can't handle it for some reason because they are genetically different somehow. There is not enough discipline in today's society. It's why we have all these issues. |

everyone goes through puberty, but it's much more traumatic if you have gender identity issues. when you went through puberty, you were expecting breasts and hips, so while it's a big deal, it's manageable because you've mentally prepared for it. a girl with gender issues, on the other hand, subconsciously expects to grow a penis and a beard, and has so many issues to deal with that you don't, because her brain is wired one way, while her body is growing the other way. ad there isn't much available support for someone dealing with that. who will she talk to? her parents? while they may do their best to support her (they may not, though), they can't really understand unless they had the same problem growing up. her pastor? he's either going to call her a sinner or possessed, and traumatize her even farther. doctors and psychologists are expensive, and school counselors aren't trained to handle issues like these. they will just call the parents and refer them to one of those expensive doctors that the family most likely can't afford and insurance typically won't cover, and that's assuming the parents deal with the issue correctly, which is a coin flip at best. there's really no wonder the suicide rate for those kids is 50% before the age of 18, considering how little support or treatment is available, and how traumatic the experience is. it's nearly on the same level psychologically as finding out you have cancer. |

Kids these days think they know Their rights, but in truth they are making Their own rights up and thinking they are real. Kids think they arent aloud to be punished no matter what they do, so start screaming and crying because they dont get Their way. Kids are too spoilt now, I see no reason to bother anymore, the more You punish a child the more they resent the parent and the more they misbehave. All the crap I went through and I only occasionally stepped out of line when I didnt understand things. If I ever become a leading authority in the world I would pass a law making it so punishment is aloud if the child steps out of line, or misbehaves. I think Parents are also very lazy now, and just give up or think shouting is the awnser to everything, Im glad I probably wont even be a parent >.< |

Something like this happened not too long ago across from my highschool. I talked to her a few times and we were getting to be friends. She told me about how she was having problems with people at school and I tried helping her. A few days passed and she hadn't been at school and it turns out, she hung herself at the library across the street from my school. her reasons were from being bullied too much and too much stress. |

This may be all true and sad. Some people kill, others kill themselves. We all had these moments, embarasing moments, hateful moments and even lonely moments. Can you guys remember the so many times you wanted to kill yourselves? Some people didn't kill themselves, maybe because their will was stronger or their mental ability was stronger than others. But here is another possibility as to why the child was found dead. Someone might have killed him and at the same time, made it look like a suicide. The police didn't have any evidence to make that assumption, the killer was probably skilled... |

Highly doubt it, the police force have people trained to tell the difference between a suicide and a murder. They'd know. This is just an unfortunate incident that's becoming all too frequent nowadays. I know this is a few months old but, RIP. |
